film poster analysis - blade runner

the main colours of the poster are red and blue, denoted by the lighting. The left is predominantly blue, and the right is red. This connotes a divide between the corresponding characters, as blue and red are visually contrasting. The characters in the blue have pale skin and white hair, whereas those in the red have darker hair and warmer skin tones. This, along with the red-blue split, suggests the preferred reading is that the characters on the right are the good side, and the ones on the left are the bad ones. Alternatively, the reverse could be perceived as red can be associated with anger, hate and danger, implying the red people are bad. This is the oppositional reading.

It can be assumed that Harrison Ford's character is the protagonist of the film. He is placed in the middle of the poster, and is larger than the rest, so the viewers focus is instantly drawn to him. We connote size with importance., so this is most likely the preferred reading. The man is affected by both red and blue lighting, suggesting his character is conflicted in his moral alignment.

Alternatively, the red is mostly on his face, and the blue is coming from behind, so it could be interpreted that he is a hero being chased by the blue villains.

Throughout the poster there are a set of foreign characters. These are Japanese, so the preferred reading is that the film is set in Japan.
